A reader painted her large bedroom in a dark brown and then faux finished over the top of it. She was finding it difficult to find colors that work well for drapery. She wants to do scarves over the rods but didn't know what would be the best colors. Answer: I personally like brown as a decorating color. We used a lot of different shades of brown, rust and beige in one of our rooms. We used rust open knit curtains. They are not a solid fabric but a knitted open weave like a shawl. So they let in almost all the light and let us view out the window. Letting in the light is an import consideration if you use a dark color on your walls. You can't go wrong if you use monochromatic colors ...all shades of one color. Look for shades of off-white, wheat, sand, beige, yellow, yellow-orange, orange, rust, red and multiple shades of gold. Orange, yellow and red should be used sparingly, but can be very striking in small accents. Colors to mix with brown are the deeper shades.
