Nature has what you need to unwind and to find the joy of life again. No shopping mall or honky tonk can help you find your purpose in life. You want to know why you are here and what you are meant to accomplish. Quiet reflection and thought will bring you into the presence of your Creator and the way will come into focus. The planet earth is composed of those colors and elements which soothe away stress.

In nature every day is a new day. The old things are gone and there is a new start. Nature is composed of both warm and cool colors. Her pallettes are seasonal. Sometimes they seem a little boring but the grey and offwhite of winter is a perfect time for reflection and creativity. Soothing colors - the cool colors - are the blue sky, the blue-green ocean, green lakes, blue mountains, rolling green hills, and green forests charm us with their cool, calming colors. They have the quality of spiritual renewal. In the presence of nature you find you can let go and find your equilibrium again.

If you need cheering up, nature has provided the lively warm colors. A trip to the grocery store could be enough to pick up a handful of flowers, either live or silk. Everyone loves the bright reds, oranges and yellows of autumn and the bold joyful yellow and red of tulips in spring. In summer we are surrounded by the quiet, lazy greens. A little goes a long way when you are using yellow, orange and red. They are cheerful, warm accent colors, in small quantities, but they look like a fire engine in the room if you use large quantities. You would have a difficult time trying to relax because they are so electrically charged if you were surrounded by yellow, orange or red.

The fine art of color design is learning to use the power of color to create the appearance of life in your art and design. A look through a catalog of Monet's water lillies will illustrate how life is created on canvas or paper using color design. It is surprising to see how many paintings he created using water lillies and he created many masterpieces by using color to show the reflection of the sky and the light on the water. Even if you weren't fond of his subject, you would see his use of color was the joy of his painting.

You might love blue and would never consider adding orange in any form to your design. But orange will make make your blues come to life. If you love blue-green you almost certainly never buy anything that is red-orange, which is its complement. Generally there is a preference for either the warm or cool colors - not both. The real joy of color design is found in the surprisingly beautiful relationship of opposite colors. One color dominates in the design, about 60% and the complement might be 10%, using an analagous color for the other 30%. Analagous is a color similar to the dominate color, being close to it on the color wheel, like green and blue green.

Triads provide another interesting but more complicated and delicate design. Used wisely, they create extremely beautiful and sophisticated art. A compelling work of art will often have hidden in its design a triadic color scheme. At Easter you often see soft pastels of blue, pink and yellow. They are especially pretty together as pastels and they are Triads. Triads are 3 colors equal distance apart on the color wheel, such as red, blue and yellow - the primaries.

Technically speaking colors come in many forms, starting with primary, secondary and tertiary. Primary colors are red, yellow and blue.

The secondary colors are orange, violet and green, resulting from mixing two primary colors. Orange is produced by mixing red and yellow. Green is the result of mixing blue and yellow. Blue and red produce violet.

Tertiary colors are the result of additional color mixes between primaries and secondaries. Their names are self-explanatory, yellow-orange, orange-red, yellow-green, blue-green, red-violet and blue-violet.

White is added to make a tint. Black is added to produce a shade. Gray is added to produce a tone.

Color speaks and color changes everything.
  • Blue is serene, tranquil, dignified.
  • Red is exuberant and shouts.
  • Yellow is cheerful and sunny.
  • Green is harmonious and unifying.
  • Orange jumps up and down.
  • Soft orange - peach - is welcoming.
  • Brown is warm, dependable, traditional.
  • Burgundy adds life to dark colors.
  • Grey is serious, conservative, professional, sophisticated.
  • Black is permanent, alone it is depressing.
  • White is refined and sophisticated.

    More about Using Color

    Yellow
  • Yellow is bright and cheerful - you will find some yellow everywhere.
  • Canary, beige, gold, champagne, wheat, brown, natural wood floors and furniture - are in the yellow family.
  • Brown is a good foundation and most other colors can be used effectively with it.

    Red
  • Red is shouts very loudly and can only be used wisely by toning it down with white, gray or black.
  • Add white to red = pink.
  • Add gray to red = maroon.
  • Add black to red = brown.
  • Maroon and burgundy are excellent foundational colors and can easily be adapted to multiple color schemes and are considered masculine.

    Blue
  • Soft muted blues are cool and relaxing.
  • Deep blues and blue-grays are dignified.

    Green
  • Green is a mix of blue and yellow.
  • Green brings a harmonious balance to the other colors, as it does in nature.
  • Nature reveals luxury and beauty in hundreds of shades of green, grass and leaves are a dominant color. Because it is understated it is often better appreciated by people as they get older.

    Orange
  • Orange is a combination of yellow and red - agitating and spontaneous, good to get attention, but not always pleasant to live with.

    Violet
  • Purple and violet are a blue and red mix. They are romantic in the lighter forms, and often spiritual.
  • Purple can be depressing.

One dominant color should comprise 60% of the color scheme. It will "settle" the design. A second color will be the main accent color and a third color used very sparingly such as 30% and 10% to achieve a good balance. Now you have icing on the cake.

The more lively warm colors can be inspirational but should be used in small amounts. Add a flower to for a light touch. Add a painting or a photograph for the perfect finishing touch.
